Talks in NStar Strike Conclude Without Deal No New Session Scheduled May 23, 2005

BOSTON --Talks resumed Monday between the union representing about 1,900 striking NStar workers and negotiators for the electric and gas utility, but there were no indications of progress and no further negotiations were scheduled.A federal mediator who participated in the talks said he advised negotiators to adjourn the three-hour session and review their positions.

John Martin of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said he would be in daily contact with negotiators, but no further sessions were scheduled. The sides were in separate rooms at the federal agency's Boston office, with Martin relaying information between them.Gary Sullivan, president of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 369, said NStar did not offer concessions despite union modifications to some of its positions.

"We made note of their points and we're considering them," NStar spokeswoman Caroline Allen said.Monday's negotiations were the first since engineers, linemen and some other employees represented by Local 369 went on strike May 16 after a five-year contract expired and talks toward a new agreement collapsed. Key issues include the proposed elimination of vision and dental care for retirees, forced overtime, and pension benefit cuts for new workers.

The strike involves nearly two-thirds of NStar's workers. The Boston-based, investor-owned utility is relying on managers and contractors working overtime to continue service to customers in eastern and central Massachusetts.NStar serves about 1.1 million electric customers and 300,000 natural gas customers in the Boston metropolitan area, Worcester and coastal areas from Cape Cod to Cape Ann.
